Bedroom interior
Lewis House addition and remodel, Washington DC
This interior
remodel of an existing 1950’s era suburban home included an enlarged bedroom,
walk-in closet and enlarged bathroom. The objective was to create an open
feeling bedroom and bathroom and provide demanding requirements for storage
and closet space within the framework of the existing house. Reconfiguring
the roof allowed the introduction of a variety of day lighting devices.
A multi-function service wall was created between the bedroom and bathroom.
The wall contains cabinets serving both the bedroom and the bathroom, high
and low interior translucent and clear windows between the rooms, the door
into the bathroom, a hanger column in the bathroom and a window seat area
in the bedroom. The bathroom was designed to allow for distinct spaces for
the shower, toilet and double sink vanity. A 16” wide light gap was created
between the exterior bathroom and the existing exterior walls. A translucent
window over the vanity mirror opens into the gap. During the day this window
creates a soft diffused light within the bathroom over the vanity. The light
gap creates a light and more expansive feeling space within the bathroom.
